A message from our friends at The Village of Arts and Humanities

Dear Village Family,

Please help us reach out to Mayor Michael Nutter. The Mayor has some tough budgetary choices to make this week. Please encourage him to make the best choice by saving the acclaimed Community LandCare Initiative.

Here’s what you can do right now:

1. Facebook – Post “Save Community LandCare” to Greenworks Philadelphia. (You must click “LIKE” to post. Let them know The Village needs this program to ensure a clean, green and safe community space.)

2. Email the Mayor: michael.nutter@phila.gov

3. Call the Philly Office of Sustainability: 215.686.3495

Here’s what’s happening:
You may have heard that Philadelphia has passed a significantly reduced budget from earlier projections. The proposed budget eliminates the city’s Community LandCare Initiative and its umbrella program, the $2.4M Vacant Land Program managed by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.

Without CLC funding, the Village can no longer support its dedicated cleaning and greening landscape crew.

CLC contributes enormously to the economy and quality of life in Philly by employing more than 100 residents in full- and part-time green jobs. The crews from 15 community organizations tend gardens, mow lawns, clear rubble and eliminate waste on over 3000 of Philadelphia’s vacant lots. (There are more than 33,000 vacant parcels in Philadelphia!)

At The Village, our CLC crew is more than a land care and maintenance team. They are local preservationists dedicated to maintaining a legacy of public art space, community gardens, and performance parks.

As witnesses to the positive impact of vacant land revitalization, your voices speak most passionately and accurately about the need to clean and green the city’s vacant land.

Thank you for your dedication and support of The Village. We’re grateful that you are part of our family.

Sincerely,

The Village

Acclaimed artist and former political prisoner Elizam Escobar will speak at Taller Puertorriqueno on July 24.

Escobar, who spent nearly twenty years in prison for his involvement in the Puerto Rican independence movement, will speak about recent events in Puerto Rico, including a six-week student strike that was repeatedly attacked by police.

Since the strike ended, police also attacked a demonstration at the Puerto Rican legislature that was demanding transparency in the budgeting process. A professor of painting at the School of Fine Arts in San Juan, Escobar participated in the strike and has been involved in independence organizing since his release in 1999. He will speak about the strike and the growing police violence in Puerto Rico. He will also celebrate the release of his co-defendant, Carlos Alberto Torres, who will be freed on July 26 after 30 years in prison. Escobar will be in Philadelphia to paint his second mural in North Philadelphia.

He will be joined by poet and filmmaker Joseramon Che Melendes.
